Sherlock is brought to us by Steven Moffat, the man who brilliantly updated the story of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde a few years back with Jekyll, and who is currently in charge of Dr. Who. This time he’s taking on the worlds most famous detective. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson. This is no period piece. It takes place in modern day London and uses things like text messages (actually txts are a large part of the show’s style). Also in this upgrade Watson is an Afghan war vet and Sherlock has a nicotine patch addiction.

Sherlock Holmes is the latest movie from director Guy Ritchie and stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams.  It’s based on the classic Sherlock Holmesstories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  The stories feature one of the greatest fictional detectives of all time, and perhaps the most famous so I’m not going to really talk much about that.  It has been an eternity since I’ve read a Sherlock Holmes story or watched one of the other movies so I can’t really accurately compare this to those.

 

The plot of this one is about Holmes (Downey Jr.) and Watson (Ritchie) trying to stop a criminal who seems to be using magic to murder and apparently has risen from the grave, Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong).  Holmes is held back by his resentment of Watson for leaving him to move in with his fiance and also by Irene Adler, a love interest/con artist who has not so coincidentally just re-entered his life (played by Rachel McAdams).
