Paul is the story of geeks who are visiting America (Frost & Pegg) for the San Diego Comic-Con. After the con they’ve rented an RV to travel around the country to various famous UFO sites. Along the way they meet an alien who just broke out of government custody and with him go on an adventure while trying to stay ahead of the government agents out to get all of them.
Paul has an excellent pedigree. Written by and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost who’ve done a lot of great stuff like Spaced, Sean of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz it then brings in Greg Motolla of Superbad and Adventureland to direct. They also went ahead and filled the cast out with tons of great comedic talent like Kristen Wiig and Jason Bateman, among many, many more. You’d think this would be just an incredible movie. But I actually had mixed feelings about it.
It’s generally a good movie. It’s certainly got it’s funny moments. But it kind of drags for maybe the first half of the movie. There’s good stuff but it’s a little slow. The last bit is wonderful though. Out of the entire cast Kristen Wiig shines the brightest as a sheltered woman just discovering the world. All of her pieces are comedy gold.
Overall this is a decent movie that I probably will give a second viewing to in the future. Maybe I wasn’t in the greatest mood when I saw it the first time. It’s certainly enjoyable though and if you’re a fan of Pegg & Frost then certainly check it out.
