Hall Pass is the latest comedy from the Farrelly brothers (There’s Something About Mary) and is about 2 couples, Rick (Wilson; Wedding Crashers) & Maggie (Fischer; The Office), Fred (Sudeikis; Saturday Night Live) & Grace (Applegate; Anchorman), who’s relationships have gone a little stale.  With the men being sex obsessed and the women a little sick of it, they give them a “hall pass” where for one week they can go out and do anything like they aren’t married while the women are out of town, hoping the men will gain a newfound appreciation for what they already have.

If you’ve seen the commercials for this then you have a good idea of what to expect.  This is a pretty standard R-rated sex comedy.  It’s got a lot working for it though.

It’s a decent script that is well executed.  And isn’t that all you want sometimes?

You have a good cast who does a great job.  There’s the male leads of Wilson and Sudeikis who both keep the Farrelly’s wacky sensibilities balanced with a little more grounding.  Then there’s the female leads of Fischer and Applegate.  They’re both very likeble and come across as wives you’d be lucky to have, which is important because ultimately you want to root for these couples to stay together.

A special mention should go to Alexandria Daddario (Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lighting Thief) and Nicky Whelan (Scrubs season 9) as the main eye candy for the men to chase after.  Especially Whelan, who is cast perfectly as being the woman who is so tempting she’d be hard for a man to say no to.

The main issue I had with this movie was that there was nothing really special about it.  It’s exactly what you’re expecting and nothing more.  It’s filled with laughs and it’s a good time.  It just didn’t strive to go a little further into something special.

Be sure to stick around for the credits for 2 extra scenes plus an outtake featuring Stephen Merchant.

Overall if you like this kind of movie, you’ll enjoy this.  It’s light, funny, and good, just a little bland.
