Drive Angry is a fast paced grindhouse-type movie about a man (Cage; The Rock) who escapes from hell to save his baby granddaughter from being sacrificed by a cult leader (Burke; Twilight) who thinks of himself as the antichrist. He’s joined by a badass girl (Heard; All The Boys Love Mandy Lane) who just wants out of her abusive relationship, and is chased by The Accountant (Fichtner; Prison Break), basically the grim reaper who is tasked with taking Cage’s character back to hell.
This seems like it’d be an easy movie to hate. The plot is kinda wacky, but refreshingly straightforward. And Nicholas Cage has pretty much stopped even trying. But he was a good fit here. This is a pure cheesy grindhouse type movie that is meant to be enjoyed for it’s action and gore and not much else. And it succeeds. It’s fun to watch.
Amber Heard, it goes without saying, is awesome. As are Fichtner and Burke, both performing superbly in a manner befitting this movie. It is what it is. This was not meant to win awards, it was meant to give you an escape for 90 minutes. There’s some good action scenes and overall it just works.
I could complain that early on it is a bit hard to figure out the whole granddaughter piece of information. It’s not entirely clear what went on there but it is explained well later on in a good fashion and that would really just be being picky.
So if you want 90 minutes of cheesy fun, check this one out.
