Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star is about a naive, not very smart midwestern kid (Swardson; Pretend Time) discovers that once upon a time his parents were both porn stars (Herrmann & Flynn). After making this discovery he heads to Hollywood to become a star. Once there he discovers that with his ultra tiny penis and unique sexual abilities he’s not what the porn industry is looking for while befriending a waitress with dreams of more (Ricci; Black Snake Moan, After.Life). Through a series of events he winds up becoming a unique sensation.
Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star was a horrible flop at the box office and poorly received in general. So I went into it with trepidation and not expecting much. But I really was pleasantly surprised. It is clearly not a movie for everyone, and a lot of people will hate it. But if you enjoy over the top, off-beat humor, you might love this movie.
It is totally ridiculous and unconventional but it contains some real belly laughs. Although packed with lots of great comedians, Christina Ricci as the love interest is absolutely incredible as is Swardson as the titular Bucky Larson.
The movie is filled with wonderfully funny one-liners and although it really isn’t a movie for most, it is packed with tons of super funny stuff. It’s also an odd mix of crude humor with an odd sweetness that’s really a nice mix, especially with it’s general feel of oddness thrown in.
I feel like this is a great movie to find a following late in it’s life through home viewings. I think people will slowly discover this and perhaps make it a cult classic.
I recommend it for anyone with a bit of a strange sense of humor or someone looking for something different but do warn it’s not for everyone. If you’re intrigued you can get it via these links:
