All American Orgy is an independent comedic drama about 3 couples who head to a farm in Louisiana to have an orgy, all with hopes that this will fix the problems in their relationships.  As things progress they quickly learn that things won’t be so simple.

There’s a couple of things that jump right out as being easy to criticize about this film.  It’s not really “beautiful”, meaning it’s sort of very plainly shot, mostly using available light.  It’s low budget also shows.  But if you can get past those things you might find yourself laughing.

I’m not sure how much of the movie was scripted and how much was improvised, because a lot of the best jokes seem like they could go either way, which is a good thing.  It means it felt natural.  And therefore credit to both the cast and the writer (who is a part of the cast).  And there are a ton of good jokes.  There really was a lot of really great moments.

However between these great lines that you’ll probably feel like going around quoting, there’s this drama part that doesn’t quite work.  And a lot of the stuff that doesn’t work focuses on the male characters.  It feels like all the flaws in the movie were written into them and the female characters meanwhile remain relatively flawless.  There’s a sort of mean spirit that the men have that makes you hate 2 of them and not really like the third.  And when I say hate, I mean hate.  Like you don’t even want to watch them.  This major flaw scars the rest of the film where it could have been much lighter.

There’s a little very slight bit of nudity for a moment, but other than that this movie mostly earns it’s rating with language, which is mostly just what you’d expect for a movie about an orgy.  In fact the title alone probably earned it an R.

It does say something though for the performances that you do hate the men so much.  All around with such a small cast every member is vital and here they are all wonderful.

Overall it’s a so-so movie.  It’s got it’s shortcomings but it’s also got some nice comedy.  I’d say check it out if you can.
