Retrovirus is a graphic novel about scientist Zoe Wallace who gets enlisted to come to a top secret antarctic research station where she discovers that a pharmaceutical company has unearthed a perfectly preserved Neanderthal and wants to study it’s physiology. But everything we knew about them quickly gets thrown out the window and Zoe uncovers all the secrets the company is hiding from her and her fellow scientists.
Retrovirus is a great little offering. It’s 64 full-color pages packed with an attractive female scientist, tons of violence, and a great plot. It feel like this could be a Michael Crichton book. That’s what the plot is most like and overall the book is reminiscent of. If you’re a fan of the “science goes bad” type story, then don’t even bother finishing this review and just buy it right now.
My main problem with the book was I felt it was capable of more. It was a great quick read, but I wanted a little fuller, in depth, experience. I know this is a graphic novel, but I would have enjoyed a full novel of this story. It certainly had the ability.
Other that that super small problem, I really enjoyed Retrovirus and I think you’d be smart to pick it up. It’ll make a great stocking stuffer around this time of year. It came out today!
Bucko is a graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics that compiles the complete web comic of the same name written by Jeff Parker and drawn by Erika Moen. It follows the adventures of Rich, named “Bucko” by a drunken Gyp before what could be a one night stand, as he makes his way hungover to a job interview where he finds a dead body in the bathroom. From there he, Gyp, her butch lesbian roommate, his clueless hipster roommate, and an assortment of crazy characters make their way through the city to solve the mystery.
This review is a little different then most of what we’ve done before. It’s not for a new book, but instead for the brand new re-issue of volume one of Scott Pilgrim, Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life for the first time in a hardcover and full color edition. The book about Canadian slacker Scott Pilgrim who falls for the mysterious Ramona Flowers while playing in his band Sex Bob-omb is the source for one of my favorite movies of all time, Scott Pilgrim vs The World.
The original six graphic novels were all in black and white, which added to the charm of the books, but of course there’s always a contingent that can’t stand anything in black & white. So for them and for other Scott Pilgrim fans, Oni Press is re-releasing the whole series in full color. But don’t worry if you love the originals, the color takes nothing away. In fact it actually is quite seamless. I absolutely loved reading through this collection and seeing everything in color. It’s pretty great. The colors are vibrant yet muted and feel just right. Also a lot of the stuff in this book was re-created almost exactly in the film.
This new edition also includes an afterward by O’Malley talking about his life around the writing and release of this book originally, as well as character sketches and some insight into them and things like actual photo comparisons of his drawings and the real places that inspired them, as well as the original pitch.
If you never read the Scott Pilgrim books you’ve been missing out and these new releases are the perfect time to get on board and read some of the best graphic novels in recent memory. Packed with humor and weirdness and an odd sense of actual romance they’re pretty incredible.
Like I said, the color edition is super cool and is great for both newcomers and collectors. I really loved re-visiting the early book and checking out all my favorites in full color. There’s also some really great use of it in the Matthew Patel flashback piece. I recommend running out and getting this right now, or clicking one of the links below to order it online.
Why Does Batman Carry Shark Repellent? And Other Amazing Comic Book Trivia is a new book from Brian Cronin (creator of the blog Comics Should Be Good) where he makes use of various lists to extol various bits of random comic book trivia. Some of these are by him, others are created from polls at the site Comic Book Resources (such as “Best Marvel Characters”), and then other lists are by comic creators, writers, illustrators, and more involved in the industry and love of comics. Some of these additional list makers include legends like Mark Millar, Dave Gibbons, and Geoff Johns.
Morning Glories is a comic about six new students at the prestigious and mysterious Morning Glory Academy. The six students are from all over the world and are all very different but share one common trait (which I won’t ruin for you here). At Morning Glory Academy they find out that this is no regular prep school, and instead find themselves often in fights for their lives.
