My Boyfriend Wrote a Book About Me: And Other Stories I Shouldn’t Share with Acquaintances, Coworkers, Taxi drivers, Assistants, Job Interviewers, Bikini Waxers and Ex/Current/Future Boyfriends but Have (yep that’s the full title) is the first book from TV writer Hilary Winston (Community, My Name Is Earl). It’s an autobiographical tale of her romantic life, including but not limited to the title story which takes up a good portion of the book. Yes she really was in a long term relationship with a guy and then one day while in a Barnes & Noble saw his name on a book and when she went to look through it she found what was essentially the story of their relationship.
Hilary Winston has written some great comedic television and there’s plenty of humor to be found here, but a lot of the stories contained in this book are just sad. A lot of the earlier book is where the comedy lies with it getting more and more serious as it progresses. By the end of the book when she’s experiencing a breakdown you are right in that mindset with her.
The book rings very true and although she changes all the names you never doubt a single word of it is the truth, at least as she sees it. Although one thing that will get to you is that she leaves a lot of things unsaid, like names and what exactly this book that was written about her is (look it up and you’ll find that info easily enough).
I really have not a single complaint about the book though. It’s a really open story of a single woman and her quest to not be and some of the horrible shit as well as some of the funny things that that has entailed. And perhaps that’s what I really loved the most. Hilary is incredibly open. You’ll feel like you know everything about her after you read this. Brutal honesty is the way she plays it, and it works.
I cannot recommend this book enough. Pick it up immediately.
