The Losers – Movie Review

The_Losers_poster

The Losers is an action film directed by Sylvain White (Stomp The Yard) and written by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) & James Vanderbilt (The Rundown).  It’s based on the DC comic of the same name by Andy Diggle.  The plot revolves around a black ops team who is backstabbed by a mysterious CIA figure and left for dead, while at the same time 25 children are murdered.  Soon they are contacted by a strange woman who has information about the person who betrayed them and will help them get back at him.

I’ll be upfront and say I’ve never read this comic so I won’t speak to how accurate to that this movie may or may not be.  Also absolutely nothing really drew me to this film besides boredom and the casting of Idris Elba (best known for his role on The Wire).  Anyway this is going to be a short review because I honestly cannot think of much to say about this movie.

Basically the entire thing is made up of not very exciting or complex action pieces (mostly things just blow up and not in any sort of unique way) strung together by a paper thin plot.  I found a lot of this strangely reminiscent of the highly entertaining tv show Burn Notice, which does everything in this movie and more in a much more satisfying way.

The performances were average.  Jefferey Dean Morgan is basically playing a tamer version of his Watchmen role, and everyone else is really kind of a standard characature.  The exception is the villain who goes by the name Max, played by Jason Patric.  He was horrible.  I don’t know if it was the acting or just the way the part was written and then directed but he was far too arch and not incredibly menacing.

The real slap in the face here is the ending.  The entire movie is incredibly bland, but then it has what is essentially no ending.  The bad guy just sort of walks away and that’s that.  It didn’t even seem like it was keeping something open for a sequel, just that they’d reached their running time so it was time for the movie to end.

Anyway like I said, stay home and watch Burn Notice for free, but if you must:
