The Human Centipede (First Sequence) – Movie Review

The Human Centipede (First Sequence) is a new horror movie written and directed by Tom Six about a renowned German doctor (Dieter Laser) known for separating twins who after retiring becomes obsessed with dong the opposite, which would be connecting people together, in this example he connects 3 people together by sewing them together at the mouth and rectum, forming a human centipede. This particular one is made of 2 american tourist girls (Ashley C. Wiliams & Ashlynn Yennie) and a Japanese man (Akihiro Kitamura). Trailer under the break.
So a lot has been written all over the web about this movie. It’s gained some cult notoriety due to how gross the concept is. But in truth as a huge horror fan and someone who has in his lifetime actually looked for the sickest movies possible, this movie is indeed quite boring.
It’s got some decent production value for an independent horror film. However the script is really lacking. Director Six was obviously trying to make a statement about World War II, with the German doctor performing horrible experiments and a Japanese guy and the Americans. Anyway the dialogue is of porn quality, that’s when there is any. This seems to be made for an english speaking audience but a lot of it is in German and Japanese. There are good subtitles though.
The obvious thing here is the gross out factor, and while the effects are decent, there isn’t really much beyond the concept to actually be grossed out by. There’s nothing really shown. For the most part after the operation, everything is hidden behind bandages. So really it’s sort of a tease. You really want to see the after effects of this operation, but you never really get it.
Really there’s not much more to say about this. It’s a shitty movie with an enticing premise that it never really fully delivers on. However if you’d like to see it, IFC Films is distributing it currently through various independent movie theaters as well as Pay Per View. You can check what channel or theatre it’s playing on near you at this site.
