Transylmania – Movie Review

Transylmania Poster

Transylmania is an odd breed of movie.  It’s a college comedy combined with a vampire based comedy.  It’s actually the 2nd sequel to the film Dorm Daze, which was followed by Dorm Daze 2, and now this.  It’s directed by the same directors as the previous two, David & Scott Hillenbrand, and written by the same writers, Patrick Casey & Worm Miller (both of whom also have roles in the film).  It features some but not all the characters from the previous movies and to be honest if you weren’t told it was a sequel, you wouldn’t have a clue it was.

The plot of this is one of those that’s not easy to write out succinctly but basically a guy falls in love with a girl from Romania over the internet and decides to enroll in her college and spend a semester there to meet her finally, and he brings along a whole group of his friends.  But the college is in an old castle and there’s a vampire trying to bring his old lover back from her entrapment in a music box.  It’s a lot simpler than it sounds.  Anyway there’s a lot of identity mixups and the like that account for some comedic situations.

That trailer should give you a better idea of what you’re getting into.  So I mean this all seems pretty stupid right?  Well, yeah, but that’s kinda the point.  This movie isn’t taking itself seriously at all.  And is actually pretty decent taken at face value.

I mean the acting isn’t brilliant, but it doesn’t take you out of the movie.  The production quality is actually quite high.  And overall the movie is very enjoyable.  I really had fun watching this.  There’s some over the top comedic gore, but other than that this is a strict comedy.  It’s fun and if you’re not looking for something mindblowingly brilliant, but a good time on an otherwise dull night, this will more than do.

I also have to say while I’m reviewing one of it’s sequels, that I highly recommend checking out Dorm Daze.  It’s a very similar movie, but its one of those surprising gems of a comedy.  Really a quite good movie.

So check this one out if you want a couple of chuckles, especially if you’re into vampires or college type comedies.

It’s available April 27th via Transylmania (Unrated Edition) or Amazon VOD and also on DVD:
