She’s Out Of My League – Review

She’s Out of My League is a new comedy from director Jim Field Smith and writers Sean Anders and John Morris (Sex Drive). It stars Jay Baruchel as Kirk, TSA agent working a dead end airport job pining for his ex-girlfriend. One day he helps the beautiful Molly (Alice Eve) recover her phone and the two end up dating. Of course there comes the title, she’s supposedly out of his league.
I have to say I really disliked this movie. It is Hollywood dumbing everything down taken to a whole new level. Let’s start with the premise. Mainly that no attractive woman could ever like an average guy. It’s a little bit insulting, not only to average guys such as myself, but to the attractive women of the world. It’s true I see women all the time and think “she’s way out of my league” but in the real world things like personality come into play and it isn’t all about looks. But this entire movie centers around this girl being the most beautiful girl of all time and this guy is treated by everyone else like he’s a leper.
That brings me to the second thing I didn’t care for. Alice Eve is very attractive, but the level of attractiveness
we’re meant to believe she is is a little out of sync with what is going on. Nowhere is it mentioned that the character of Molly’s best friend Patti (played by Krysten Ritter) is just as, if not more attractive, as Molly herself, and Kirk’s ex (played by Lindsay Sloane)who is made out to be some ugly troll is also very attractive. Also Baruchel himself is a perfectly normal looking guy, not some monster.
But the movie does have deeper flaws than just idealistic ones. It has a really bad pacing problem, it just feels unnatural. Also it doesn’t have much conflict. They get in one real fight but you don’t feel anything about it. And probably the worst thing is it’s not even funny. It tries very, very hard to be funny but everything about She’s Out of My League is tired and has already been used. I mean they actually use a joke right out of American Pie, that was done much better in that film. One other problem I had was again with Alice Eve, not to pick on her, I thought she did a decent job in the role, but I often speak of the girlfriend principle, it basically means that if an actress is playing the lead romantic character in a movie the audience has to fall for her like the character in the movie does (the same can be applied to men of course). I didn’t get that “girlfriend” vibe off of Eve and I felt like if I did it would have improved the movie greatly (although there were so many flaws this thing wasn’t going to be saved by that alone).
The movie tries to redeem it’s horrible superficial message towards the end with some talk about self confidence and how that counts for a lot, but it’s too little too late. It wasn’t totally awful. I can say Jay Baruchel puts in a good, but definitely not his best performance, and the same can be said for Krysten Ritter.
Overall I recommend skipping this one. It’s just not worth your time and you’re out of it’s league. However if you must check it out at least do us the favor of supporting the site and buying your tickets through the Fandango link below.
