Repo Men – Review

Repo-Men-Poster

Repo Men is a new movie directed by Miguel Sapochnik, written by Eric Garcia and Garrett Lerner based on the book of the same nameby Eric Garcia, which apparently was written at the same time as the screenplay.  The plot is eerily similar to that of Repo! The Genetic Opera.  In the future a big corporation can manufacture organs making the need to wait for a donor obsolete.  Of course these new organs come at a very steep price, with payment plans available with very high interest rates.  When someone can’t pay they’re paid a visit by a repo man who cuts them open and reclaims the organ.  Jude Law is one of these repo men, in fact he’s one of the best.  However something goes wrong and he winds up needing a new heart from the company.  He quickly finds that with this new heart he has a sudden empathy for the people he’s supposed to be getting organs back from and as such can no longer perform the job. Since he can’t do the job he falls behind on his payments and soon he has repo men coming after him.

I expected to hate this a lot.  I mean I hated Repo! The Genetic Opera and that even had some actors I really like in it.  But a few minutes in I actually found myself getting sucked into it.  Unfortunately that was short lived.  There are too many mistakes to overlook.  Some of this stuff is spoiler-y so I’ll hide that under spoiler tags.

The first thing is that Forest Whitaker’s acting, which is usually great is horribly uneven here.  Then there’s the homeless singer girl (Alice Braga) who winds up being Jude Law’s companion for a large part of the movie.  She’s totally dead weight and adds nothing but problems to the film.
For example, he is heartbroken over his wife leaving him but then pretty much forgets any feelings he had for her after he meets this girl, despite there being no bonding or chemistry.  Just that whole entire beginning of the movie is out the window.
There’s also a weird thing where the amount of violence and gore rises considerably the further into the movie you get, climaxing with a ripoff of the famous Oldboy scene.  Also the entire thing just feels sort of generic.  There isn’t anything that feels original or new or exciting.  And finally there’s the cop out of an ending.

One thing I did enjoy were a couple of pieces of score and some interesting soundtrack selections that stood out but it’s too little.

I’d say overall this one’s not worth your time.  However it’s your life, if you wanna spend an hour and 45 minutes of it watching this at least pay for it through our link:
