You Are So Undead To Me – Book Review

You Are So Undead To Me is a young adult book by Stacey Jay about Zombie Settler Megan Berry in the small town of Carol, Arkansas. A Zombie Settler is kind of like a psychiatrist for the dead mixed with a vampire slayer. Basically it’s a trait passed down through the family in which the Settler’s have some kind of draw so that if someone dies with something unresolved they go to that person and it’s the Settlers job to take their statement and send them back to their grave. But there are also times when a practicer of black magic will raise a corpse. These ones are not so friendly and the Settlers must get rid of them in different manners.
This story is told from the perspective of Megan, a teenage Settler who thought her Settling was behind her after a bad attack a few years back. But on the night of a big date a zombie comes knocking on the door before her date does. The most obvious comparison here is Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and in fact the cover of the book is sorta reminiscent of the Buffy movie poster (google it). And Buffy is actually why I wound up reading this book. I kept seeing ads in the Buffy Season 8 comics for it and it looked interesting so I picked it up at the library.
Now not ever being a teenage girl I can’t really say if Megan is a realistic character, hell I can barely even remember what being a teenage boy was like at this point, but she did seem a little naive, perhaps more so than your typical teen today. The book itself is fairly tame. There’s some kissing, some gory stuff, but overall nothing too bad. I think someone around the age of 12 might enjoy it. It gets more and more predictable as it goes on but for the first half of the book it was a little bit of a mystery of why someone is trying to seemingly prevent Megan from going to homecoming. And the ending did feel like they shoved some stuff in from out of left field, but overall pretty decent.
I completely do not understand the Young Adult category though. It seems to vary quite wildly and I’d really hate to be a parent trying to figure out what I wanted my kid to read. This and Gossip Girl are both Young Adult books and could not be more different, and I’ve heard from other people that the whole genre is like that. Can’t they divide this giant category into a couple of more specific categories?
Anyway you can pick this up for only a couple of bucks on Amazon:
It also appears this is the start of a series, with another book Undead Much coming in March and available for pre-order. Jay also has another book coming in March that is already intriguing me as well: My So-Called Death
