The Weather Girl – Movie Review

Weather Girl Movie Poster

The Weather Girl is an independent romantic comedy written and directed by Blayne Weaver and starring Tricia O’ Kelly and Patrick J. Adams.  The basic plot is a local Seattle weather girl (O’ Kelly) on a morning show discovers her lover and one of the hosts of the show (NCIS’ Mark Harmon) is sleeping with the other host of the show (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia‘s Kaitlin Olsen) and has an on air breakdown.  With no job, being considered unhireable and having virtually nothing of her own she’s forced to move in with her brother (Ryan Devlin) where she meets his best friend and neighbor, Byron(Adams).

I was pretty impressed with this movie.  There was a little bit of the indie “try to make money by sticking some names in it” and it’s pretty front loaded with names and faces you’d recognize.  Besides Mark Harmon and Kaitlin Olsen (who has a couple of great scenes towards the end of the movie), you’ve got Jon Cryer, Jane Lynch, Blair Underwood, Enrico Colantoni, and Danny Strong (who doesn’t even talk in his role).  Most of these appear in the very first scene and the last scene and probably did a total of a day of work on the movie.  You can also tell there’s a lack of budget going on here, but they make the most of what they have and don’t fall into the traps many indies do.  The camera work is good and the film really looks good, as is the sound.  The art and locations work is pretty good, and the acting is really great.

Where this movie excels really is the performances, script, and directing.  Tricia O’ Kelley has to hold most of the movie on her own and does so admirably.  It’s a romantic comedy so you pretty much know how things are going to turn out before you even see a single frame, but the movie still manages to hold your attention.

I’d definitely recommend this better than your average hollywood rom-com to anyone who likes the genre or is looking for something to kill an hour and a half with.  It’s very likable.
