Scrubs Season 9 (The New Class)

scrubs

Scrubs premiered it’s 9th season tonight.  Who would have ever thought we’d find ourselves here?  Scrubs being a constantly in danger of being canceled show actually brought back after it is ended for good.  Last season was the real final season of Scrubs as we know it.  But it got good ratings and ABC wanted more, so Bill Lawrence, creator/showrunner, wasn’t going to say no and have the current crew lose their jobs.  But he had ended what we knew as Scrubs.  So this season we have an entirely new premise.  Now we’re in med school (but also still a hospital? which is the same hospital but in a different place actually inside a med school?) and instead of following Zach Braff’s JD, we’re inside the mind of Kerry Bishe’s Lucy.

Tonight’s two episodes were to slowly introduce us to this new world.  They featured a lot of familiar faces, such as JD, Turk, Dr. Cox, Kelso, and appearances

by Janitor, a very pregnant Elliot, and even Snoop Dog Doctor.  As I understand it these old faces are only signed for a few episodes and won’t be around much as the season progresses.

The other familiar face was last year’s newcomer Eliza

I actually felt that having the old characters on the new show was a mistake.  It would have felt much less awkward to start completely fresh.  As such if I judged this as a completely fresh show it’d be one that I’d really, really want to like but don’t know if I’d ultimately be able to.  It’s just rough.  The new cast really don’t hold up and this was especially apparent any time they shared the screen with an old cast member.  Kerry Bishe is adorable but I’m not sure she can carry the whole show on her shoulders, Dave Franco’s character is entirely too annoying, and the whole thing just wasn’t clicking like it should.  Jokes fell flat, and the entire thing was just uncomfortable.  I intend to give it a fair shot.  Maybe it will pick up once the old cast leave, but for now I can’t give it a glowing recommendation.
