American Pie Presents: The Book of Love – Movie Review

American Pie Presents: The Book of Love is the 7th, yes 7th, American Pie movie, with 4-7 going straight to video. The supposed plot of this one is that the characters find the Bible from the first American Pie, only it gets destroyed in an accident so they must try to decipher what is left of it in order to hook up with their dream girls. Only that’s not really the plot. The bible has little to do with the film and is usually just a gimmick to get to the next joke that was wedged uncomfortably into the film. Really it’s basically just about 3 guys trying to get laid. And then they stick in Eugene Levy and name a minor character Stifler to tie it to the American Pie series. Why Eugene Levy appears in every single American Pie movie I will never know. He must be getting a serious paycheck, because his talent is wasted in these straight to video versions.
This is just a teen sex comedy. A genre I am intimately familiar with and can be done really well. Here it’s not. Although it’s not all bad. I think most people watching this movie are going to get what they want. Raunchy jokes and gratuitous nudity. There is plenty of both in Book of Love. Especially the nudity.
It seems like they took pretty much the whole budget and used it to pay random attractive women to take their tops off. At times this felt like a Girls Gone Wild video, there were so many tits. Now I wish I could share here but I’m pretty sure my host has a policy against such images (actually I just checked for the hell of it and actually they do not have such a policy, maybe next time).
As for the rest of the movie it’s pretty predictable. From the first few seconds you can pretty much tell what is going to happen the entire rest of the movie. Also there’s way too many characters and way too many plots. For example there is the Stifler character (his relation to the original isn’t even bothered to be explained as it was in past sequels) who does little but show up every few scenes and hit on a girl, and perform in one big gag towards the end. Then there’s a random British girl (Louisa Lytton) named Imogen (really?) who does nothing the entire movie. She talks about her older boyfriend who we never see and who apparently dumps her at some point or does something so she dumps him but either they never bothered to actually write that part or it was cut and it makes no sense.
Like I said earlier there is a lot of the plot getting sidetracked to work in some joke or another. The plot of the book only comes in small doses scattered throughout. But I guess they needed a title and then had to justify the title. And not everything is horrible. The acting is decent (Jennifer Holland was the standout for me), as is the cinematography. There is perhaps some of the worst CGI ever in a couple of places which was just unnecessary. This is a total middle of the road comedy. You could do worse but you could do a lot better. But I think the core audience looking for raunch and tits will be satisfied.
The movie comes out on December 22nd, so it’s a good last minute holiday stocking stuffer.
